Statements in the House

Business of Supply March 9th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, my colleague cited in the billions of dollars, 28, 16, 36, 28 and 25, as a loss to the economy. This is a yes-or-no question. Does he have a number to cite if we have a lack of climate change initiative, other than the cost to the future of our children?

Petitions February 26th, 2020

Madam Speaker, I have a petition here on behalf of constituents who are concerned for the Uighur population in China and its marginalization.

There are five requests within the petition for which the petitioners call, and I would like to present this on their behalf.

Black History Month February 26th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, as February comes to an end, we conclude Black History Month.

I want to recognize Wilma Francis as a community leader and a strong voice in my riding. Every Monday she brings together Caribbean Canadian seniors from across Mississauga with the Cari-Can Group, helping to keep seniors active.

I also recently sat down with the very influential Bishop Lennox Walker from Praise Cathedral Worship Centre, which has the largest congregation in the GTA, and learned the history of lawyer Robert Sutherland.

I am proud of our government for putting Viola Desmond on the $10 bill, making her the first woman in Canadian history to be featured on Canadian currency. Desmond's story of fighting against systemic discrimination and racism is a reminder to all Canadians of our collective responsibility to fight inequality.

I want to encourage all Canadians to start conversations and learn the history of these remarkable Canadians who helped shape this peaceful country we are in today.

Emergency Debate February 25th, 2020

Madam Speaker, with the lack of initiative from the Conservatives, we might actually have to move to a new planet when it comes to climate change.

Through NRCan, we announced the electric vehicle and alternative fuels infrastructure deployment initiative, which was $8 million for 160 EV fast chargers that actually amounted to two stations in my riding. Does the member acknowledge that we are working diligently for a cleaner future?

Cancellation of Teck Frontier Mine Project February 25th, 2020

Madam Speaker, could the hon. minister reiterate some of the numbers associated with clean tech and the good work Canada is doing? I am very impressed to see how progressive our government is.

Business of Supply February 20th, 2020

Madam Speaker, I want to thank the Conservative member for the impetus taken in the debate. I listened to the rhapsodies from my colleague.

I have a simple question for the member. Not too long ago a convoy of trucks came to Ottawa because of the drivers' grievances. They felt they needed to be heard here. During that blockade, I was walking to the House. It could have been perceived that my parliamentary privilege was impeded because I could not actually get here. That is fine.

My question is, would he describe any of those grievances or that convoy as luxurious?

Business of Supply February 18th, 2020

Madam Speaker, we unfortunately do not have a permanent cure for cancer. As the member stated, I cannot imagine there are more than two degrees of separation before we know somebody who has been affected by cancer.

However, we have made a lot of strides and moved the yardstick forward through a lot of funding. Of course, there is a cost associated with this.

Even though there is a very large cost, would the member acknowledge that the commitment of moving from 15 weeks to 26 weeks is still moving the yardstick forward?

Business of Supply February 18th, 2020

Madam Speaker, we are often fixated on the full term of EI, but we know individuals do not necessarily always need 100% of the 15 weeks, or the full term. One can actually utilize EI by being, as the member referred to it, flexible.

Perhaps the member could reiterate that what our government has done to utilize the current term is very beneficial. Again, I think he used the term "flexible".

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Act February 7th, 2020

Madam Speaker, in our previous government, we provided an unprecedented amount of funding to the CBSA for restoring its ability to address concerns at the border, such as illegal border crossings or, in my neck of the woods, the smuggling of weapons perhaps.

Our government is quite aware of the need for the CBSA to be able to do its job. In order to allow its agents to do their job effectively, we have been quite pleased to continuously support it through funding at the national level.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Act February 7th, 2020

Madam Speaker, I thank my colleague for his advocacy and good work on this issue.

As I stated earlier in replying to the previous question, it is important that we address domestic concerns first and take care of our housekeeping here internally before we address any other concerns.
