Natural Resources committee  The same answer goes for that question as well.

Christyne Tremblay

Natural Resources committee  I am very pleased that that question has been asked, Mr. Chair. With your permission, I will yield the floor to Beth MacNeil, our assistant deputy minister for the Canadian Forest Service.

Natural Resources committee  Mr. Labonté will answer.

Natural Resources committee  Thank you for the question. Increasing sales of zero-emission vehicles is a major objective for the government. As you mentioned, a new incentive program is designed to encourage consumers to choose those vehicles. Transport Canada, not Natural Resources Canada, is responsible for the program.

Natural Resources committee  Thank you. I am very pleased that you raised that question, which unfortunately is very much in the news, given the flooding we are seeing in Quebec and Ontario. They cause major costs in economic terms, but also in human terms that must be considered. Often these natural disasters threaten the safety and resilience of people as well as the protection of their possessions.

Christyne Tremblay

Natural Resources committee  I am happy to answer your question about natural disasters, Mr. Cannings. My department is actually going to receive $88 million to ensure that communities are resilient to natural disasters. A large part of that amount will be used in fighting forest fires. As you know, British Columbia saw major forest fires last year.

Christyne Tremblay

Natural Resources committee  Okay. We are working on several fronts, the first of which is the competitiveness of the sector. Together with all provinces and territories, we have developed a forest bioeconomy framework, which will allow us to diversify forest products and add to their value. The framework is actually the first item on the agenda for the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers meeting, which starts this evening.

Christyne Tremblay

Natural Resources committee  Thank you for this very important question. I think we are expecting the report from the NEB panel on May 15. It will be a very big piece in the modernization of the organization. We'll also see how we can make the review more effective. It was raised earlier in the discussion today that the investor wants predictability and wants an effective process.

Natural Resources committee  I think the role of NRCan for the marine conservation targets is really to bring science in to help the government make the best choice in the different areas that can be targeted for conservation. The Government of Canada is on track to meet the 2017 target of 5% protection of Canada's marine and coastal waters.

Natural Resources committee  The increase is due to additional spending in priority areas to deliver the pan-Canadian framework. This funding increase also reflects the importance of NRCan in helping the government to meet Canada's mission innovation commitment to double the funding to R and D by 2020. Almost $100 million of this $145.5 million increase is devoted to advancing clean energy research and development and demonstration projects through the energy innovation oil and gas clean technology program.

May 4th, 2017Committee meeting

Christyne Tremblay

Natural Resources committee  Thank you for the question. I think it's a key question. The federal facilities are very important. As you know, I come from a provincial government, and it was something that impressed me when I arrived, to see that the federal government has very good research facilities. We received $89.3 million in 2014.

Christyne Tremblay

Natural Resources committee  In fact, the number is that we have 1,000 electric charging stations, 80 fast charging stations, nine natural gas refuelling stations, and three hydrogen refuelling stations. Aside from that, we also gave support to different companies. For example, AddÉnergie in Quebec received money to deploy charging stations across Quebec and Ontario.
