Canadian Heritage committee  I appreciate that answer. Also in your suggestions were the executive's financial practices. What can we do? With regard to the importance of that forensic auditing, how can that also have organizations held to account?

Canadian Heritage committee  You also mentioned in your written submission that your success—that of both the men's and women's national teams—has come despite the current system. Can you describe how a safer and more responsible culture will not only benefit the safety and well-being of our players, which is first and foremost why we are here, but also focus on more success?

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you very much, Chair. I want to thank all of the witnesses, virtually and in person, for being here and for the bravery they're showing. There was no pathway for many of you. You're the ones who created that path. That's an important legacy. You need to know that there are people now who are brave enough to come forward because of people like you who led that way.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. I want to thank all of the witnesses for being here for this important study as we move forward. Perhaps I will start online with Ms. Gassewitz. What are the challenges of having national sports organizations, provincial sports organizations and territorial sports organizations setting those standards for safe sport?

Canadian Heritage committee  I think that was very thorough: a consistent policy, education, evaluation and then communication. All of that would require data monitoring, so how can we make sure that we have the data that's out there? How can we make sure that we get that data and allow those steps to happen?

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. I'll address Ms. Lafrenière. I appreciate you being here. In my riding of Kitchener—Conestoga, we have the Wolverines, which is the women's and girls' hockey association U15 B team. It is led by all-women coaching. One of the Wolverine's coaches said she had a female coach in her last years in minor hockey and that gave her the confidence that she could be a coach herself.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. Ms. Shore, to say there's an imbalance is obviously an understatement. We all want to protect and nurture our children, but we also want to give them opportunities to grow and succeed. At the same time, you talk about creating a culture of creating athletes and pushing them to be elite as opposed to nurturing our children.

Canadian Heritage committee  Okay. Thank you. In the final minute that I have, Mr. Sheehan, I want to give you the microphone. You described it as having a loss of hope, yet you're here. You're here, and hopefully an inspiration to people who are younger than you. What message of hope can you give to that younger generation that let's them know that you're speaking on behalf of so many people who are not here speaking?

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. Thank you to all of the witnesses for being here today, for your courage and for your stories. I usually take a lot of notes, and I couldn't; it was that emotional. Ms. Glover, perhaps I'll start with you. Can you tell us more about how we can better educate those who coach athletes?

Canadian Heritage committee  We need to talk about educating the athletes themselves, the parents, then coaches and the administration. Thank you for that. It's very helpful. How do we respond to those coaches who have been former athletes? They say, “It's always been this way. It was like that for me, and I came out all right.”

Canadian Heritage committee  I think I'm out of time, but I would have asked if we could scale it up to a national level. Thank you.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you very much, Chair, and thanks to all of the witnesses for being here both online and in person. I'll cut things down, because I've learned so much already. Ms. Forsyth, I heard the need for more education, and I've heard you, in previous testimony, compare it to how we treat concussions now versus how we used to treat them.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you very much. I'll turn to Madame Poirier. How do we get athletes to trust the system that they believe has failed them? If they don't trust the system, what can we do to build that trust so that they have the courage to come forward and file a complaint? You seem to be perfectly situated to answer that question.

Canadian Heritage committee  As you said, that's what you do, and that's appreciated, but you should have a level playing field to do that on. Maybe to Janine Beckie, with respect to Canadian Soccer Business, you said that deal is potentially until 2037, for a fixed amount. Again, if teams make playoffs, as they advance, they get paid more.
