Environment committee  Thank you.

November 22nd, 2018Committee meeting

Joe Peschisolido

Environment committee  Mr. Chair, thank you very much. I'd like to thank the witnesses for appearing. I'd like to begin my questioning by following up a little bit on a line of questioning by Madam Dzerowicz on the distinction between eating cows and eating plant-based protein. If there is a significant reduction in eating cows, what impact would that have on carbon?

Environment committee  Okay. Mr. Gracia-Garza, you mentioned types of production systems. At the agriculture committee, we're looking at the distinction between organic farming and non-organic farming. I can't remember who brought up the whole point about soil, water and fertilizer. First, is there a difference in these two types of agriculture modes?

Environment committee  Will this program be all across the country, or will it just be in Ontario and Quebec, under your bailiwick?

Environment committee  We can have a meaningful conversation here.

Environment committee  What direct impact would that have on fishing and farming?

Environment committee  I come from the great municipality of Richmond. We're at sea level. We have a very ample farming industry and fishing industry. I'd like to follow up on Ms. Dzerowicz's point about the impact of climate change with the difference of 0.5°C. What would happen to a place like Steveston or Richmond, which is at sea level, if we do have that change of 0.5°C?

Environment committee  Just like Mr. Stetski and Mr. Warawa, I come from B.C., Steveston and East Richmond. There is a different approach in B.C. than in Ontario.

November 6th, 2018Committee meeting

Joe Peschisolido

Environment committee  Mr. Jovanovic, you said something that struck me—that the goal here is not to make people poor. It's not to raise revenue. It's to change behaviour but keep the distribution of tax revenues pretty well the same. Can you elaborate a little on that, that it isn't a tax grab? How will that work?

November 6th, 2018Committee meeting

Joe Peschisolido

Environment committee  Mr. Chair, thank you. I'd like to thank all the officials for coming here and giving us a technical analysis of these provisions. As has been said, this is complex stuff, but under all the complexity there are some underlying mechanisms, principles. I don't think the Canadian public wants to get into the minutiae, but they do want to know that we know what we're doing.

Environment committee  Mr. Turner, thank you. Do you have anything to add?

October 30th, 2018Committee meeting

Joe Peschisolido

Environment committee  Mr. Turner, you mentioned briefly electric cars. About a year or so ago I made an announcement for a company on Annacis Island, in Richmond that has a prototype for a charging station for electrical buses. I think that's the type of thing we have to push forward in order to transition from our economy today into a new, more sustainable economy.

Environment committee  That would be nice. Thank you, Mr. Chair. Thank you to our guests. Mr. Turner, I haven't read your books yet, but I look forward to them. However, I was re-reading The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken, which I first read about 12 years ago. What struck me is that he talked about both the ecology of commerce but also the commerce of ecology, and the whole notion that you have to develop a system that is environmentally friendly but also plays into the desires and the needs of people.
