In my final minute, Christine Sinclair, you have a chance here—there are so many people watching, so many young people watching—to give, maybe, two messages to our youth. One is a message about this inequity on a broader scale as well.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Chair. I appreciate it. I appreciate everyone for being here—especially that you're representing a team and coming here together. It's truly inspiring. I think you should hear the word we're all whispering to each other, which is “unbelievable”. That's what we're saying.

Canadian Heritage committee  Maybe I can ask Sophie Schmidt this. You mentioned that you got Own the Podium funding. That's earmarked for the women's team because of the podium potential you have. The women's team has that. You mentioned in your opening statement that you're feeling this kind of pressure and that you've been told if you don't place in the top three, this funding won't be sustained or could be reduced.

Canadian Heritage committee  Finally, with the half-minute I have, only 4,000 athletes fall under federal jurisdiction. The signatories for the national sport organizations are there, but the provinces have yet to step up. Are they saying they don't want to step up? What is their hesitation, provincially? At the end of the day, we're trying to protect our children.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. As you mentioned off the top, there may be people listening to this public testimony on this study who could be affected, and I understand the need not to retraumatize them. In my riding of Kitchener—Conestoga, if there's someone who needs support, there are two organizations in my region.

Canadian Heritage committee  You mentioned in your opening statement about safe sport knowledge and that we need this grassroots-level support. What resources and tools, prevention tools and resources, including mental health and legal aid services, do the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner need help with right now?

Canadian Heritage committee  Yes, it is important. The anti-racism work we're doing is absolutely important. We're seeing that Canadians want to make sure the vetting process is strengthened, along with the ability to terminate contracts. All the things we mentioned today.... It seems we're all on the same page.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. Thank you to the witnesses, especially for this extra time that you've been here. It's appreciated very much. I thought I'd bring things back to more broad topics and ask you a bit more about the funding itself, about the lessons learned and about the next steps in a broad way.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. I just wanted to understand a little better. In my experience, the ministers usually come at the end of studies. I think that's quite helpful, isn't it? To have witnesses come.... It seems to be reversing the order here. I'm just a bit confused. I don't have as much experience as some members, but I thought we would have witnesses, we'd have studies and we'd extend that.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Chair. I appreciate that. I also want to thank you, Justice Cromwell, for being here and for your time and your work on this report. You've probably been closer than any of us to this situation, so it's really valuable that you're here. I appreciate it. Most of the questions have been asked.

Canadian Heritage committee  I do respect your saying that. Thank you. I think what you said a few minutes ago was that some of the recommendations in your interim report had already been taken under consideration. Hopefully that's a positive step. Earlier we touched on it briefly. What about the issue of players who are injured but unaware of some of these reserve funds?

Canadian Heritage committee  You mentioned that transparency in policy is critical. Also, financial transparency is obviously critical. The public doesn't have access to Hockey Canada's financials, but the members do. When you spoke, Hockey Canada said its members were free at anytime to ask directors of the management team for financial information.

Canadian Heritage committee  That's fantastic. Last week, we heard some witnesses—and even testimony from my colleagues across the aisle, the Conservative MPs—advocating for the possible establishment of a fund—a tax on tech giants, I imagine—that they would contribute to where they would be under no regulatory scrutiny.
