Housing  Mr. Speaker, the housing crisis is hurting seniors in Port Moody. The Liberals have promised to build more affordable housing, yet they continue to sit on their hands and drag their feet. The closed Canada Post office at 45 Mary Street is a good location for quality affordable homes for seniors.

Electoral Participation Act  Mr. Speaker, I want to thank the NDP member for Nanaimo—Ladysmith, who has really opened the debate and discussion on electoral reform in this Parliament. One of the things the member for Nanaimo—Ladysmith raised today was the opportunity for persons with disabilities to have an independent and private vote in an election, even from home, if we go to what could be telephone voting.

Electoral Participation Act  Madam Speaker, I also want to congratulate the member's nephew for his graduation. The member was just talking about transportation. In my riding of Port Moody—Coquitlam, we have an aging population, and I know a lot of seniors have a difficult time with transportation to the polls and have been asking me for an extension to make it easier, to have more days to vote.

Housing  Madam Speaker, the federal government's very own Public Sector Pension Investment Board partnered up with the rich real estate CEOs to invest in 71, 75 and 79 Thorncliffe Park Drive. Now, they are hiking rents and evicting people, and the Liberals are letting them get away with it.

Miscarriage of Justice Review Commission Act (David and Joyce Milgaard's Law)  Madam Speaker, I mentioned in my speech that the Liberal government had the opportunity to advance these types of criminal justice amendments much earlier, back in 2021, and it chose to wait an additional three years to do it, so I think what the Liberals need to focus on is passing laws that help people in Canada and worrying less about what things are called.

Miscarriage of Justice Review Commission Act (David and Joyce Milgaard's Law)  Madam Speaker, as the critic for disability inclusion, I often think about people who communicate through sign language. We know there are many people in this country who have different methods of communication. I understand that French and English are our official languages in Canada, but I would like to see a justice system that can accommodate any kind of communication that people need to represent themselves in the system.

I agree with the point she is making about being able to be represented in one's own language. It is absolutely a necessity.

Miscarriage of Justice Review Commission Act (David and Joyce Milgaard's Law)  Madam Speaker, it is absolutely devastating that this happened to a constituent of hers, but again it shows Conservatives do not understand what we are talking about in Bill C-40. We are talking about, in Bill C-40, the fact that marginalized people in this country, more often indigenous people, indigenous women, and people of colour are being wrongfully convicted in this country, and then they do not have access to appeal because they do not have the funds for it.

Miscarriage of Justice Review Commission Act (David and Joyce Milgaard's Law)  Madam Speaker, I rise to speak, on behalf of the residents of Port Moody—Coquitlam, Anmore and Belcarra, in support of Bill C-40, an act to amend the Criminal Code, and to advocate for it being enacted as quickly as possible. I think about the people who were wrongly convicted and who could not afford high-priced lawyers, more often than not women and other marginalized groups, who need reform to the justice system.

Main Estimates 2024-25  Mr. Speaker, the member talked about CMHC financing. He knows well that there is a REIT right now, Starlight Investments, that is evicting tenants in Thorncliffe Park and that is refusing to come to committee, even though it has been asked twice. I want to let the member know that CMHC financing to billionaire REITs is resulting in low-income tenants being evicted.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, tenants at Thorncliffe Park and across the country are rising up against corporate greed, which is causing skyrocketing rents and resulting in evictions and rising homelessness. Renters cannot keep up with the costs of unfair corporate practices, and the Liberals themselves are partners in making rental units unaffordable.

Persons With Disabilities  Mr. Speaker, over one million Canadians with disabilities cannot afford bare necessities. They cannot keep up with groceries, housing or their medication costs. The Liberals promised that their new Canada disability benefit would lift Canadians with disabilities out of poverty; it will not.

Budget Implementation Act, 2024, No. 1  Mr. Speaker, the member and I went to the same high school. In grade 10, the required reading was The Handmaid's Tale, which was hard to read. I will tell members what else is difficult to read, and that is what is happening in the United States and the fact that it is looking at taking away a woman's right to choose.

Persons With Disabilities  Mr. Speaker, Canadians with disabilities are struggling to keep up with the high costs of food and housing, and the Liberals' measly $200 plan will leave people with disabilities living well below the poverty line. The government has an obligation, legally, to uphold human rights and to ensure an adequate standard of living for everyone.

Persons with Disabilities  Mr. Speaker, a landmark report this week exposed that women with disabilities are more likely to visit the emergency room during pregnancy, because reproductive care is not accessible. It is impacting their mental health during pregnancy and postpartum. People with disabilities have had enough of the Liberals' half measures.
